Land Planning & Management
The Bethany property is over 350 acres of mixed use land, sitting on the edge of the Town of Antigonish. An environmental assessment of our land and buildings in 2001 awakened us to the gifts of the beauty and diversity on our land with its agriculture fields, woodlands, wetlands, and wildlife habitat. In light of what we learned in our study of the Universe Story, we saw the land's potential to "become a spoken word, a sacrament of healing to a wounded earth and to proclaim the beauty of God's Creation".
Since 2001 we have:
- studied our soil, water, wildlife, and plants to better understand and steward our land
- Implemented a major green landscaping project involving a 50% reduction in mowing, planting tree windbreaks, planting native flowers and bushes to reduce the need for water and pesticides, and planting berry-producing bushes that encourage birds to visit and nest.
- Maintained our gardens, labyrinth, Contemplative Trail and grounds as a welcoming space for people to enjoy.
