Strategic Direction
Enhancing Contemplative Dimension of Life

Contemplation is a way of moving beyond the surface into the depths of self, nature, life, and God. Contemplation invites us to slow down, pay attention, and stand with open hands, hearts and minds before the "Other". This expands our vision and creates in us the ability to connect with the life forces flowing through our universe. Contemplation helps us drink deeply from the well of life.

We live in a busy, noisy world, often disconnected from the natural world around us. The speed and intensity of the information bombarding our senses, keeps us living on the surface of life. This prevents us from exploring the depths of our thoughts, feelings, and our relationship to the natural world and each other. Living on the surface shrinks our vision and deadens our ability to be responsive to greater energies and purposes of life.

We Marthas value deeply a contemplative stance to life, while recognizing the challenge of finding time and space for quiet contemplation. To help ourselves and others we

  • operate centers in Antigonish, NS and Lethbridge, AB that offer retreats, programs , and space for embracing contemplation
  • operate two hermitages on Bethany grounds that allow people to be immersed in the wonder of nature
  • provide worship space at Wellspring, on St. F.X. University campus to those from other faith traditions such as Buddhist Meditation and Muslim prayer groups
  • Built a contemplative hiking trail

  • Maintain a mowed, outdoor labyrinth
  • Welcome visitors to our outdoor gardens
