FAQ

What is required for a woman to become a Sister of St. Martha?
We welcome women of faith and prayer who desire to follow Christ and give service to others. A woman would need to have the potential to live celibate chastity, poverty and obedience in the context of community. Hospitality is central to who we are, and so it is important for a person to have the capacity to be a welcoming presence. We believe that hospitality is shown by Martha in the Scriptures and is expressed in the statement of our mission:

We Sisters of St. Martha inspired by God's graciousness,
hear, embrace and respond to the cry for Gospel hospitality

Living this mission requires a woman who has energy and a desire for ministry.

We ask women considering consecrated life, as a minimum, to complete a high school education. We also believe that it is helpful if the person has experienced living independently and working on her own.

It is understood that the woman is a practicing Catholic and is free from any canonical impediments. For example, if a woman had been married and divorced, she would need to obtain an annulment.

We are a group of women who treasure simplicity and celebration. We welcome those whom God calls to our congregation, rejoicing over and respecting the mystery of their persons, the diversity of their gifts and the new life each person brings to our community.

What is the first step that I could take to see if I am called to be a Sister of St. Martha?

You could begin immediately by getting in touch with Sister Yvonne Vigneault, at inquiries@themarthas.com.  She will respond to your questions and will be able to help you in discerning the call of God for you.

If I do begin to look at your Congregation, can I discontinue the process at any time?

Yes, you can. The process is in place to help you discover God's call for you. Discernment is an important part of your journey whether or not you become a member of the Sisters of St. Martha.
