The sisters are rooted in the earth and from their labours a 'tree of life' grows, bearing apples that become seeds for new life. From an apple on the ground springs a vine connecting all the figures in the painting.
The light of God is shown as a whirling cosmos, overlaid by the sun, representing the congregation's oneness with 'the universe story' and its unfolding light. This light touches each one of the figures.
The fifteen sisters wear blue robes with crosses representing their oneness with gospel hospitality. The sisters are shown in ministries typical of the Marthas - praising, teaching, praying, nursing, comforting, helping others, offering hospitality, making art and music, gardening, standing in community.
