Archives

With 100 years of history behind us, Bethany Archives has the important job of collecting and preserving records and published materials that document the growth and development of the congregation. From pre_history and the founding period (1894-1900), to current day, the Martha archivist arranges and describes materials - textual and photographic - according to archival principles.

Congregation members and other authorized researchers are welcomed to access the archives.

Sisters Florence Kennedy and Anne Marie Proctor are the congregation's archivists. They say some of the most interesting archival material collected and preserved is information and photos of the founding sisters and the first motherhouse. Other firsts and pioneering activities chronicled in the Bethany archives are the first mission outside Nova Scotia (St. Augustine's Seminary in 1913); the Martha presence in Alberta in 1929, followed by missions to Saskatchewan and British Columbia and in 1985 and in Quebec in 1986. Sisters also exercised their pioneering spirit in Newfoundland to begin administering a parish in one of that province's outports in 1992 and expanded their presence outside of Canada in 1986 to the people of St. Kitts, West Indies.

Other archival highlights include annals of local houses from 1921 to the current day, celebrations of congregation jubilees of 50, 75 and 100 years; ministries of health care, education, household management, social work, retreat and pastoral ministries; Bethany farm, including the celebration of Dutch Days; and, personnel records of sisters, as well as those for each house.
