Spiritual and Religious Care at Glen Haven Manor
Sister Mary McMahon ministers at the Glen Haven Manor Home for Special Care in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. Her ministry of Spiritual and Religious Care Coordinator involves being with the residents and their families at a vulnerable time in their lives. She sees her call also as supporting staff members in their healing and supportive ministries at the Home. This is a long term facility and Sister Mary collaborates with clergy of other denominations, volunteers from various church communities and staff at the Home.
Sister Mary organizes prayer services and memorial services as well as setting the environment for and assisting at the celebration of Eucharist. Accompanying the dying and their families, visitation at wakes and celebrating the residents life at their funeral services is an important part of this ministry.
To use Sister Mary's own words:
"I consider this ministry as one of presence to those I visit. Many times it is being with them as a source of comfort and loving attention. Since many suffer from dementia and are unable to interact in the usual way, I am frequently amazed by the affirmation I receive from families who have found my presence with them and their loved one helpful, especially when the resident is dying."
"As long as you did it to one of these least of my sisters and brothers, you did it to me." Mt. 25:40
